How to Use a Router as a Switch

1. Disable DHCP:

   • Access the router's configuration page by typing its IP address into a web browser (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
   • Log in using the router’s credentials.
   • Navigate to the DHCP settings and disable the DHCP server function. This prevents the router from assigning IP addresses, which will be managed by your primary router.

2. Configure the LAN IP Address:

   • Change the LAN IP address of the router to an address within the same subnet as your primary network but outside the DHCP range of your primary router to avoid conflicts. For example, if your primary router uses 192.168.1.x with a DHCP range of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100, set the secondary router’s IP to something like 192.168.1.101.

3. Disable WAN Port:

   • Ignore the WAN/Internet port on the router you are converting to a switch. Instead, connect one of its LAN ports to a LAN port on your primary router using an Ethernet cable.

4. Connect Devices:

   • Use the remaining LAN ports on the secondary router to connect other devices.

1. Performance:

   • Using a router as a switch can be efficient for small to medium-sized networks. However, dedicated switches often provide better performance and more features optimized for switching tasks.

2. Firmware:
